Coin Appraisal

Coin Appraiser Across DC, Maryland & Virginia

Professional, credentialed coin appraisals from an ANA & PNG-member numismatist. Insurance valuations, estate appraisals, and pre-sale opinions throughout Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland.

When You Actually Need a Coin Appraisal

Most "coin appraisals" people get are really just buy offers in disguise. You walk into a coin shop, the owner thumbs through your collection, and gives you a number. That number is the buy offer, not what the collection is actually worth.

A real appraisal from a credentialed coin appraiser is different. It tells you what your coins are worth in retail/insurance terms, the replacement cost. That number is what your insurance carrier needs for a fine arts rider, what an estate attorney needs for probate, and what an heir needs to understand the true value of what they inherited.

The Three Most Common Appraisal Use Cases:

  • Insurance appraisal, for adding a collectibles rider to homeowner’s or umbrella policies. Most carriers want written documentation from a credentialed appraiser. More on insurance appraisals.
  • Estate appraisal, for probate, estate tax filings, or equitable distribution among heirs. Often required by attorneys and tax preparers.
  • Pre-sale appraisal, to understand what a collection is worth before deciding whether to sell, who to sell to, or whether to send certain coins for third-party grading first.
What You Get

Three Appraisal Service Levels

Pick the depth that matches what you actually need.

Quick Valuation

A one-line total value for the entire collection. Verbal or short written summary. Great for early-stage decisions about whether to sell, store, or grade.

Itemized Appraisal

Each coin or grouping listed with grade, current market value, and notes. Standard format for insurance riders, probate, and equitable distribution.

Museum-Quality Catalog

Full written descriptions: history, variety attribution, grade analysis, comparable sales, and recommended next steps. The standard for serious collectors and high-value estates.

Credentials Matter

Why Use a Credentialed Coin Appraiser?

For insurance appraisals, most major carriers (State Farm, USAA, Chubb, AIG, Travelers) require the appraiser to be a recognized professional. ANA and PNG memberships are the two most universally accepted credentials.

For estate appraisals, IRS regulations (specifically for estates above the federal exemption) require a "qualified appraiser." ANA/PNG membership and 10+ years of practice qualify.

Working with an uncredentialed appraiser, even one with great prices, can mean your documentation gets rejected when you actually need it. See my credentials.
